Editorial Note (2026 Context)

In the 'human vs. robot' debate of 2026, the answer is clear: the hybrid model wins. Routine tasks, data processing, and millions of real-time auction signals are analyzed by machine learning, while strategic direction, offer messaging, and cost controls are managed by an experienced expert. Learn more about our AI and automation solutions.

Anyone who has worked with Google Ads even briefly knows that different bidding strategies exist for campaigns. For at least a decade, industry specialists have debated what actually works best and what the "right" approach should be. Today, I have reached the conclusion that there is no single "right" answer - at least from my perspective.

Key Takeaways

  • Algorithms process data faster: Smart Bidding evaluates hundreds of real-time signals (device, time, location, search history) in every single auction.
  • Humans set the strategic direction: Machines do not know your inventory levels, profit margins, or business goals; these must be set and controlled by an expert.
  • Where manual bidding fits: Manual bidding remains valuable for new accounts without conversion history and campaigns with strict budget caps.
  • The hybrid model wins: Maximum profitability comes from a system where algorithms optimize bids while a specialist constantly audits search queries and negative keywords.

What Is Automated Bidding?

Put simply - it is a setup where we, as advertisers, allow Google to set bid amounts automatically based on specific rules or objectives. However, you can always set maximum bid caps to limit Google's spending. Artificial intelligence (AI) is evolving at a breakneck pace worldwide. AI solutions are increasingly integrated into daily workflows - and naturally, marketing is no exception.

What Is Manual Bidding?

To simplify once again - it is an approach where we set specific maximum bids that we are willing to pay per click. This does not mean every click will cost the exact same amount, as actual CPC depends on several factors, including competition levels.

So, Which One Is Better?

There is no single black-and-white answer. I can only share my perspective based on 15+ years of experience. If you had asked me this question seven years ago, I would have insisted that manual bidding was the only correct approach. Today, in my daily work, I use both manual bidding and automated solutions simultaneously. It all depends on the specific goals I want to achieve.

When to Use Automated Bidding

Automated bidding relies heavily on data - the more data available, the better informed the AI becomes, leading to precise bids and superior results. In my experience, automated bidding performs exceptionally well for campaigns focused on conversions or conversion value, provided there is a healthy conversion volume. If a campaign generates only a few conversions per week, automated bidding can sometimes prove highly inefficient. At the same time, I have seen situations where switching campaign settings from manual to automated bidding produced a noticeable boost in profitability.

What About Manual Bidding?

There are scenarios where manual bidding remains the most effective choice. When exactly? That requires hands-on experience and data analysis skills. For instance, manual bidding often outperforms automation in high-competition niches where we know the exact floor and ceiling bids for the industry. By setting manual bids correctly, we can aim for the most profitable ad positions. As a reminder - holding the #1 position in Google search results is not always the best outcome. In fact, it is often not the most profitable position. Manual bidding can also work better for campaigns focused on clicks rather than conversions. Yes, those scenarios still exist.

Automated vs. Manual Bidding: Final Verdict

I will give a philosophical answer - in marketing, and specifically in Google Ads, everything comes down to data analysis and measurable results. Ideally, you should test both approaches. Even an expert with decades of experience cannot build a campaign that is 100% optimized from day one. The more data you gather, the deeper your understanding becomes regarding campaign performance and optimization pathways. My recommendation - start with manual bidding, run structured tests over 14 to 30 days, then switch to automated bidding and test again. Compare the data to determine which bidding model suits your specific campaign or account. There are no right or wrong choices: there is only finding the most profitable solution for your business.
