Performance Max campaigns evolved from an experimental solution in 2024 to the industry standard. In 2026, PMax is utilized with strict strategic control: audience signals, high-quality video assets, and negative keyword lists to prevent wasted budget. Learn more in our Google Ads campaign audit.
Key Takeaways
- All channels in one campaign: PMax combines Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, and Maps based on Google's machine learning models.
- Creative quality is decisive: Weak headlines and generic photos force the algorithm to generate low-quality video and display ads.
- Audience signals accelerate learning: First-party customer databases and remarketing lists help the algorithm find high-value buyers faster.
- Search campaign synergy: Exact match Search campaigns must be maintained in parallel to protect priority keywords from PMax cannibalization.
Google Ads has been around for nearly 24 years and is constantly evolving. I must admit, subjectively speaking, that the pace of development was much faster in the beginning, with new features arriving in the Google Ads platform every year. In recent years, that development seemed to slow down, at least from my perspective. Performance Max campaigns are one of the biggest recent innovations in the Google Ads system, and it looks like they are here to stay.
What exactly is Performance Max?
It is a new type of campaign that combines multiple campaign types and artificial intelligence capabilities. Simply put, Performance Max is a campaign that allows you to place ads across all Google resources simultaneously. While previously you had to create separate campaigns for Search, Display, YouTube, Gmail, and other networks, Performance Max consolidates everything into one campaign. It is worth noting that this does not mean specialized campaigns are no longer necessary, as there are still situations where higher results and profitability can be achieved through dedicated campaigns. However, Performance Max campaigns can serve as excellent supporting campaigns.
When should you actually use Performance Max campaigns?
First, you need to understand the phase your product or service is in. Is it already widely known and searched for by many people? Or is it a new, innovative product/service that consumers need to be introduced to? In principle, Performance Max campaigns are useful in both cases. Personally, I prefer using Performance Max for new products and services because it is a very effective way to educate the audience and generate demand for your product. An additional advantage of this type of campaign is the relatively low average cost-per-click, which, of course, depends on the networks where the ad appears. In any case, the campaign is definitely interesting for companies with limited marketing budgets.
Performance Max components
To use a Performance Max campaign, a few factors must be considered. The first, and perhaps most important, is that you need conversion tracking in your Google Ads account. Performance Max uses artificial intelligence to improve itself, and conversion tracking is vital for this. Without conversion tracking, you cannot even physically create the campaign.
Next, visual ad materials are crucial. Since ads are placed across various networks, you need different ad formats, ranging from images to video. A logo image is also mandatory. The more ad material formats we can add to the campaign, the better results we will achieve.
Expert Insight
Currently, while working with clients, Performance Max has become a standard part of our campaign structure. There have been situations where Performance Max campaigns were the most successful in terms of conversion count, but more often they act as supporting campaigns that generate their share of conversions with very good profitability. Furthermore, it is usually the case that the longer a Performance Max campaign runs, the "better" it gets. This happens thanks to artificial intelligence capabilities: the campaign monitors and analyzes the results and optimizes itself.

In the example, you can see that the campaign works with a very low average cost-per-click while still generating a significant portion of the conversion volume.
Executive Summary
Although I was initially very skeptical about the effectiveness of Performance Max campaigns, I can honestly say that I now use this campaign type in 90% of cases. They fulfill their role perfectly and are quite effective, especially for companies with limited advertising budgets. If Google continues to improve and refine this campaign type, it has the potential to become the primary Google Ads campaign format.
